Metabolism during pregnancy

Glucose screening and gestational diabetes

The O’Sullivan test is a screening test. An altered result does not automatically diagnose gestational diabetes.

How screening is usually performed

  • A defined glucose load is taken.
  • A blood sample is collected at the protocol time.
  • Preparation and fasting requirements must be confirmed with the centre.
  • Nausea or discomfort may occur; tell staff if you cannot tolerate the solution.

If screening is altered

The result may indicate the need for confirmatory testing, commonly an oral glucose tolerance test or another protocol-based approach. Screening alone should not be labelled as diabetes.

Interpretation uses the relevant laboratory/protocol thresholds and clinical context.

If gestational diabetes is confirmed

The plan may include dietary education, glucose monitoring, adapted exercise and obstetric surveillance. Some patients need medication or referral to a specific pathway.

Dr Odriozola can support nutrition within a coordinated plan without replacing obstetric or endocrine recommendations.

After birth

Gestational diabetes commonly improves after birth but increases future metabolic risk. Follow the postpartum testing plan provided by the care team.
