Early ultrasound

The first ultrasound: seeing what is expected at each stage

Scanning too early can create avoidable uncertainty. Estimated gestational age, symptoms and history determine the most useful timing and approach.

The first ultrasound: seeing what is expected at each stage
Complementary follow-upAskabide + Osakidetza · birth at the reference hospital

Possible aims

  • Confirm an intrauterine pregnancy.
  • Estimate gestational age.
  • Assess the number of sacs and embryos.
  • Identify structures expected at that stage.
  • Assess cardiac activity when appropriate for gestational age.
  • Review the uterus and adnexa where indicated.

Why a repeat scan may be needed

The last menstrual period does not always correspond exactly to ovulation. In very early pregnancy a difference of only a few days changes what is visible.

An inconclusive scan does not automatically mean a non-viable pregnancy. Progress is interpreted over an appropriate interval using all available findings.

Volumetric transvaginal probe

At selected early stages we use volumetric transvaginal probes with GE Voluson E8 systems. The approach is offered when it may provide useful information, with prior explanation and respect for consent and privacy.

Pain or bleeding

Severe pain, heavy bleeding, shoulder pain, dizziness or fainting should not wait for a routine appointment. Urgent assessment is needed to exclude complications, including ectopic pregnancy.
