Weeks 11–13+6

First-trimester ultrasound

This is a key examination for dating, early anatomy and screening information. It is not simply a scan to “see the baby”.

What is assessed

  • Gestational age and biometry.
  • Number of fetuses and, in multiple pregnancy, chorionicity/amnionicity.
  • Cardiac activity and accessible early anatomy.
  • Nuchal translucency and other protocol markers.
  • Placenta, uterus and relevant structures.
  • Uterine artery Doppler when included in preeclampsia screening.

Screening is not diagnosis

Ultrasound may be combined with maternal age and biochemical markers to estimate risk of selected chromosome conditions. High- or low-risk results are not diagnostic confirmation.

NI/+ adds another screening approach through cell-free DNA in maternal blood, but it also remains a screening test.

Preeclampsia screening

How maternal factors and measurements are combined.

If the examination cannot be completed

Fetal position, gestational age or imaging conditions may prevent a particular measurement. Movement, waiting or a partial repeat may be recommended without this necessarily indicating an anomaly.
