Finding out fetal sex from maternal blood
Complementary follow-upAskabide + Osakidetza · birth at the reference hospital

How it works

A maternal blood sample is collected and circulating genetic material is analysed for information related to sex chromosomes. Collection is similar to a routine blood test.

The minimum gestational age, turnaround and conditions depend on the current method; Askabide confirms them when the test is booked rather than publishing details that may become outdated.

Difference from NI/+

Specific fetal sex test

Primarily answers the fetal sex question and is not equivalent to full chromosome screening.

Calderón NI/+

Estimates risk across all chromosomes and CNVs >7 Mb and can include fetal sex.

Limitations and repeat samples

Gestational age, the amount of fetal genetic material and other factors may affect the result. An inconclusive result may require a new sample.

Genetic fetal sex information does not replace anatomical ultrasound and says nothing definitive about overall fetal health.

Before attending

  • Confirm the applicable minimum gestational age.
  • Ask about the estimated report time.
  • Mention twin pregnancy, transfusion, transplant or another relevant circumstance.
  • Choose whether you want fetal sex only or expanded prenatal screening.
